It was my job for 5 years to develop and test IC engine systems for unmanned applications. I filtered through hundreds of "breakthrough" engines, some that had even run and been through testing. Heavy fuel (jet/diesel) was always the holy grail. The military is sick of having to cart around a dozen different fuel types and additives. They want one fuel for everything. From cargo jets to fighters to tanks to UAVs, one fuel. I've yet to see any of these engines actually work, despite DARPA or AFRL funding.
